Steven Munar and The Lunatics at Sa Congregació venue in Sa Pobla
Last friday at Sa Congregació (Sa Pobla, Mallorca) we have the opportunity to assist to a new concert by Steven Munar with his brand new band, The Lunatics. They were opening for the canadians Great Lake Swimmers in they first visit to Mallorca (and probably to Spain). Incidentally, we should thank Tomeu Gomila for let us enjoy all these great bands and singers he manage to bring to our island year after year. His very own “Waiting for Waits” is becoming one of the best long term concert season for every folk, alternative rock, americana and, generally speaking, for every music fan around. He truly deserves not only our commitment but also to get some funding from the local authorities.
An excerpt of a (fictional) phone conversation between Tomeu and his beloved Tom: “Tomeu, may I come to Mallorca? Not yet Tom, really. You know, there’s some more guys people here should listen to before you came… I just got into a band that… Oh come on Tomeu you must be kidding! Tom, please stop complaining about that, we both agreed on this at the very begining… you’ll have to wait.”
But let’s talk about Steven for a moment. Friday’s was a very sad night for him because his father has just passed away. I didn’t know for sure if he would play, but he did because definitely he’s a great artist. I could not say then how much we felt for him, so I tell now. Steven, take care.
On the concert’s reviewer side, I liked the way this Lunatics sounded and really enjoyed the gig. I hope to hear them soon again in other circumstances and wish Steven the strength and peace of mind to write and record some new songs that made an album at least as good as Higher (his best to date IMHO). I definitely prefer the former british mood of Higher to the late american way of Travel West.
As usual, the sound at Sa Congregació was pretty good and the lights were really poor, as you can see on the photographs.
